Time certainly does fly - when you're having fun!

It's hard to believe it's been over one month since I posted on my blog.

I know it's been busy.  Alot of family stuff going on, watching GRANDkids, artshows, exhibits, and I have been busy creating art.

Let me show you what I've created since my last entry on May 4th.

                            Each of us have a story we could tell about how a smile, 

given or received,

changed the course of events in our life.

(if only for a moment)

In 2015 I started a Smile Project - I set out to find people who believed in the value of a smile as I did.  I asked each person to send me a photo of them smiling.  I charcoal paint/draw each smiling face.  Then you and your smile are included in my Smile Project.  You see... I want real people, with real smiles.  I can only do this with your help, your smile.

The clock is ticking. 

My goal is to acquire 52 smiling faces + me by the end of this year or sooner.   Right now I have 29 beautiful smiles.  I need 23 more smiling faces in order for this project to move on to the next phase.

Here is what I want to do:
  #1.  create a very big piece of art with all of YOUR smiling faces
  #2.  the message it will carry is "when you smile the world smiles with you
  #3.  I envision it being exhibited in many places to promote the value of a smile

what I've been up to, lately

Let me share with you some things I have been working on in my studio.

I took a short break from other activities to do this real quick pastel practice in my art journal.

Chalk Pastels are one of my favorite mediums to work with.  It goes hand in hand with charcoal.

Both mediums are very forgiving.

Eagerly I did a charcoal drawing of Marita to be added to the Smile Project.

I'm on the look out for more smiles for this project.  My goal is 52 faces to finish this project.  Right now I have 26, the half way mark.

One of my intentions is to adapt to drawing/painting looser portraits.
I'm fully aware that in order to accomplish this I need to practice, practice, practice.  I can do that!
I did these 2 ladies as I babysat for my GRANDdaughter, while she napped.

2015 in review

It actually was quite interesting to retrieve all the art I created in 2015 and put them in one place.   I hadn't realized I had created so many pieces.  Memories surfaced as I recalled the stories behind each piece and the smiles offered up for my Smile Project.

One thing I know for certain is the role that each and everyone of you fulfill on this creative journey of mine.  Little or big your role is significant and appreciated.

It's not always easy being an artist.  Most times my ego fear-based doubtful mind wants me to believe that making a living as an artist will never work.  This is something I cannot nor will not ever give up on.  I truly believe that I am doing exactly what I am suppose to be doing.  I, also, believe that I have only just begun.  That day in August 2011 that asked God/The Universe to show me if there was something else I was suppose to be doing with my life and I took a pencil and paper and drew a face.  Well that was the beginning.  I had absolutely no idea I could draw.  My creative journey began on that day.

I thank you from the depth of my heart for your continued support, encouragement, and words of motivation.  You've listened to me.  You've raise me up when I felt discouraged.  You've given me the courage to continue to put one foot in front of the other.

I'm looking forward to what 2016 will bring.

Smile Project Update #2

This is an update to the absolutely beautiful smiles that are presently part of my Smile Project.  
They make me smile when I look at them!

One morning last year, as I woke up, this idea was in my head.  It's been residing in my heart waiting to come to fruition.  Lately,  I've been feeling little nudges urging me to get it out of my heart and out into the world.   My intention is to create a piece of art expressing the value of a smile and the title is tentatively going to be "When You Smile the World Smiles with You".  (this title is subject to change during the creative process)

This is where you come in:  

IF you believe in the value of a smile and want to participate all you have to do is email me a hi-res photo of you smiling to smileee001@aol.com - in the subject line please type smiling face.  Once I receive your photo I will draw your smiling face and I will let you know when I will be posting it.

In most instances, your photo on your facebook profile will do.   When I have gathered enough smiling faces I will be creating a very large unique and fun piece of art.

The memory of a smile

Each of us have a story we could tell how a smile given or received changed the course of events in our lives.

I know I could sit here and tell you many stories.  

Since the early 80's I began to really appreciate the value of a smile regardless of any imperfections my worldly mind has placed in my head.  I have a broad smile, most times my gums are showing, creating multiple smile lines all around my cheeks, and streaks of those same lines extending from my eyes.  When I was a little girl I use to not smile much because the others kids made fun of me and called me gummy.  Imagine that!  Smiles are not just the curvature of ones lips, it's a way to express, from your heart, when words may not be enough.

A Smile

Consider for a little while

The power of the human smile.

It may seem such a minor thing,

But it can cause one's heart to sing!

In times of sorrow or despair,

It's silent message is, "I care."

If one is feeling weak and spent,

A smile conveys encouragement.

When anger drives two folks apart,

A smile can mean a brand-new start.

Between two people who have cared,

A smile recalls a moment shared.

When fears have someone all up-tight,

A smile says, "It will be alright."

When separation brings a tear,

A smile says, "I'll be waiting here."

And then, as well, it has the knack

Of saying, warmly "Welcome Back."

A smile's the sunshine after rain,

A smile's the joy that follows pain.

Oh, what a difference it makes!

What little effort smiling takes!

Consider then, for just a while,

The power of the human smile.

A smile is not a minor thing

Its use can cause one's heart to sing.
